10/23/2015 · When you upgrade your first factory to T2 (land, air, or naval, the concept is the same for all three) it automatically becomes a HQ factory. Once the first HQ factory is complete then a new upgrade button unlocks in all T1 factories of the same type. Meaning that once a land factory is upgraded to T2 all other T1 land factories gain a new upgrade option. This upgrade I am calling the “support” factory..
The first T2 factory you build is an HQ factory. It has high mass cost just like in original balance, but once built, it allows you to build support factories of the same level. A support factory has slightly less buildpower and is much cheaper, allowing for mass production of higher tier units.
I dont really know why this happens, my suspicion is that the player used a factory template which contained an upgrade to a t2 support factory . The t2 hq factory upgraded to a t2 support factory while draining no mass nor power using approximately the buildtime of a t2 support factory . It was using the t2hq->t3hq upgrade animation.

In FAF , factories change their price depending on if you upgrade them or build with a higher tech engy. In equilibrium, the prices are tuned towards upgrading from existing factories, so building with engies may not give consistent drain values …
FAF introduced Support Factories and made the vanilla ones HQ Factories.Support Factories are cheaper. They can build, but they don’t provide the tech level. They can only be built after building a Factory HQ. So your game flow would become, for example: Build a T1 Factory. Build another T1 Factory. Upgrade the one to T2 HQ, They added the HQ -System. After upgrading one factory to t2 / t3- HQ , you can build whay cheeper t2 / t3-factorys.
