If the curvature of your bass neck is not correct, you need to adjust the truss rod. To adjust the action, turn the screw in the truss rod to change the curvature of the neck. If the gap is too large, insert the Allen wrench or Phillips screwdriver into the screw (located either on the headstock or at the other end of the neck) and then tighten the truss rod by turning the screw clockwise.

Adjust your intonation to compensate for the neck and string height adjustments you’ve made, rechecking the string heights as needed. Once you’ve got the action all set adjust the pickups to compensate for any string-to-string tonal imbalance. 6/16/2011 · A bass neck should normally have a slight bow. Too much bow or too little bow means you need to adjust the truss rod on the bottom of the headstock. Once youve done this, raise or lower the bridge or the individual string.
5/13/2011 · 1/16 seems close to normal for a bass. The action is going to seem high if you’re used to playing guitar. Have a look down the neck and see if there is a visible bow in it (is a lot easier to see on a bass neck due to it’s size) you might need to make some.
5/16/2011 · It depends on the style of instrument and player. You should try to adjust your truss rod until your neck is flat and play it. Then you can continue to add a slight amount of relief until the neck feels comfortable. Since the neck changes with the seasons, this adjustment will be fairly often.
10/11/2012 · If it squeaks, stop turning immediately. If the neck has not cooperated at this point it is time to insert a washer or two under the truss rod adjusting nut. Another thing you can try with a particularly difficult neck is to help the truss rod by clamping the neck into a back bow. Loosen the truss rod nut so that it turns freely.
